The Pochoir Monotype Method
May 20 and 21, 2023
10am – 4pm Complete
Monotype printmaking is an immediate and versatile process. The pochoir method, using stencils cut from card stock, is especially spontaneous. Stencils are inked in solid colors and layered face up on an inked Plexiglas plate. This first print is quite graphic with bold shapes and colors. Next the stencils are removed from the plate, turned over and again layered on the ghost ink remaining on the plate. This is when the magic begins – with unpredictable patterns emerging as a result of the layering process. The flipping, layering and reprinting continues – with each new print a bit more subtle than the previous one.

Water-Based Monotype Workshop
Fri – Sun, April 14 – 16, 2023
10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
In this three-day workshop, water-based paints are applied with brushes and other tools onto Plexiglas plates to create painterly one-of-a kind monotype prints. The plate is first lightly sanded to allow for a more complete transfer of the image. Layers of watercolor and gouache paints are built up and blended on the plate and then allowed to dry before being transferred to dampened paper with an etching press. Watercolor pencils are used for drawing and mark- making. We experiment with manipulating paint on the plate using a variety of texture tools. We will also explore chine collé, a method of collage where rice paper is adhered to the support paper with wheat paste during press transfer.

Watercolor Monotype with Chine Collé
September 15 – 17, 2022 10am – 4pm Complete
Explore the Sitka grounds, discovering patterns in the natural environment and creating sketches that will be the inspiration for a series of Chine Collé papers, a technique in which rice paper is adhered to a heavier support paper during the printing process. Back in the studio, sketches are transferred to Kozo paper with Micron pens and other tools, and drawing guides are created on the back of prepared Plexiglas plates. Next, we paint on the Plexi plates using watercolor paints and pencils, building translucent layers and allowing the plates to dry. Using wheat paste as glue, the painted plate and Chine Collé paper are printed together onto dampened Stonehenge paper with the press.
