BIOGRAPHY
Marcy Baker was born in 1959 in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, and received a BFA degree in textile design from Syracuse University in 1982. The following year she moved west, and after exploring the Sierra Nevada area of Northern California, settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1991. There she was introduced to the monotype process and found it the perfect medium to express her affinity for pattern and color. The arid New Mexico landscape also informed her uncluttered mixed media constructions. Baker’s prints and collages have been exhibited in numerous venues around the country, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts group exhibition at LewAllen Contemporary and two solo shows at Running Ridge Gallery. In 2001 Baker and her husband relocated to Portland, Oregon. Inspired by the rich urban and natural landscapes, she began painting in acrylics, building delicate layers of paint alternated with collage elements of drawings and prints. Her work is included in the collections of Hallmark, Kansas Wesleyan University, and Graphic Chemical & Ink Company, and has been published in Oregon Home magazine. She teaches printmaking at Multnomah Arts Center and is an artist member of Print Arts Northwest, an educational nonprofit that operates for artists, educators, and collectors in the community. Baker’s paintings and monotypes are represented by Mary Lou Zeek Gallery in Salem, RiverSea Gallery in Astoria, and Portland Art Museum Rental Sales Gallery. Dense layers of urban and natural structures are inspiring and ever-changing. The spontaneity of the monotype process informs my approach to painting. Likewise, the structure of painting influences my printmaking method, and that dialog keeps the work moving forward. In preparation for each new series of work, I sketch the plants in my backyard garden through cycles of growth, decay and renewal. Seed pods, petals and leaves are collected on neighborhood walks and carried back to the studio, where they provide much inspiration. My process includes creating tools such as stencils and print blocks - used to develop shape and texture while building layers of paint or ink and adding paper collage elements among the layers. The appeal of collage is finding that perfect drawing or relief print or etching that relates, often in a subtle or unexpected way, to the imagery in the painting or monotype. I also draw into the surface of the work with charcoal and graphite. I like the juxtaposition of random, intuitive mark making with the orderly repeat patterns created by stencils and printing blocks. I am captivated by the delicate balance of urban and botanical forms and by the contrast of lush green foliage against a muted gray sky. With each new body of work, I set out to interpret and express these abundant surroundings. |
